Red flags

Conflicts and concerns

A bipartisan Senate committee found Apollo takes $9.2 million a year in fees from a 97%-owned hospital company. Quality declined at its Iowa case-study hospital.

Dill's $25.3 million parachute was paid by the same buyout that loaded Lifepoint with debt and ended its public reporting.

Lifepoint and ScionHealth, both Apollo companies, have now traded the same hospitals twice, in 2021 and 2026, with no price disclosed either time.

A 2026 breach exposed vendor employees' Social Security numbers. Lifepoint has not said how many.

Physician-owned hospitals

Lifepoint's hospitals sit in small markets where a physician-owned competitor would be the only alternative. A 2023 JAMA study found private equity acquisition raised hospital-acquired conditions by 25%, falls by 27% and central line infections by 38%. The POH ban protects that record from competition. Dill chaired the lobby that defends the ban through the year the ban's repeal bills died in committee.
